Unlimited storage? LIES YOUR HOST TOLD YOU

IN your quest to choose a reliable hosting provider for your blog, you must have checked out the features of several hosting companies. Why some of them offers “Unlimited disk space”, others specify an assigned disk space limit.

And if you’ve visited Usijali Hosting, we must have told you that there’s nothing like an “unlimited disk storage space”. Now, you’re confused! Why should we say that, when other companies boldly offers you unlimited storage?

Here’s the truth.

Unlimited disk storage space actually doesn’t exists in the real world. Disk is a physical thing, not a virtual or imaginary thing like bandwidth. Physical things are limited and they costs a lot.

Have you ever heard of a mobile phone or computer with unlimited disk or unlimited RAM? A hosting server is simply a computer with better processing power and features to host a website. Your website.

This is why you can’t have unlimited disk space. If any provider is offering unlimited disk space, they are most likely lying. Check out their terms & conditions. They must have mentioned somewhere that you can’t upload large files and can’t use more storage. If they don’t have it mentioned, it means just one thing. That they do not care about their customers and once your disk usage exceeds their limited or allocated resources, they will simply limit you or suspend your website.
.
So what’s disk space?

Disk space is where your site data is stored.Whatever you are storing, uploading or creating on your blog or website is getting stored in a disk. Even if you create a file in your computer or in your hosting account, it is getting stored in the disk. Think of anything!

Even if you upload an image or video or music, it is also stored in the disk. MySQL data are also stored in the disk. In fact, every type of data is stored in the disk. There’s no storage without disk.

Disk is a physical thing which costs money and stores data inside it. Anything you do on your website is stored in your hosting provider’s server’s disk. A disk costs money and comes in a fixed limit. Like a 256 GB Dsik, 512 GB Disk, 1 TB Disk, 2 TB Disk, 4 TB Disk, 15TB Disk etc. all of them costs different according to their capacity. Think of a disk space like a memory card or flash drive. It has an assigned memory capacity

Then, there’s a talk about unlimited disk space. But truth is, having a lots of things doesn’t makes those things unlimited. Even if they are using lots of disk spaces, they are also limited. . They’re always in a limited quantity.

As per a report in 2014, Facebook generates about 600 TB of data per day and they have capacity of 300 Petabytes, that’s about 300000 TB! This means they will keep increasing their capacity by buying more Disks. They can do it because they make a lot of money.

Purchasing lots of lands doesn’t mean you have unlimited land. This is because the land is in limited quantity.

Just like a land, a disk is also limited because it is made up of elements that can be found on the earth and this elements are limited. The disk costs a lot so you can’t have it for free, hosting providers have to pay for it as this is a physical thing.

So when a hosting provider tells you they offer unlimited disk space, either of two things are likely to happen. It’s either they limit the disk usage in their terms, or once you reach a particular amount of disk usage – they will suspend your website. In this case, they are simply lying by giving you false hopes.

The reason is because a hosting provider’s server has disk in limited quantity. When you store so much data that their disk gets full, they will have to purchase another disk. This will cost them money and if they don’t make enough money to purchase a new disk they will go bankrupt.
